Yang Yisun (1813-1881) Yang Yisun (Yang I-Sun, Yang Yison) is said to have learned his seal script through having studied the "Stone Drum" inscriptions. However, his sources are not so simple. "Eulogy for Famous Officials," a set of eight hanging scrolls, is one of his most monumental works. It contains elements as diverse as early Chou bronze inscriptions, the "Stone Drums," and other works of the pre-Han and Han, all of which have been absorbed and reworked into a style distinctly Yang's own. The ink tone is even charcoal blakc, and dry-brush offects appear naturally towards the ends of the strokes. The characters thave thick heads tapering to partially blunted tails; simple curves and subtly flexed horizontals and verticals are stressed. Yang's debt to his great predecessor Deng Shiru is apparent, and he earned a reputation comparable to Deng in the realm of seal script alone. ![]() "Eulogy for Famous Officials" - Dated 1873.
